Day 12 - "K"

I'm keeping it Aussie themed today with a "K" for koalas card.
I've coloured the trio with water based inks on watercolour card.

YOUR TURN: Create a card or papercraft project using the letter "K" as your prompt.

Tutorial - Stamping on Fabric

Stamps are a great way to add decoration to t-shirts, bags, pencil cases, placemats and many other fabric items. The trick is in finding an ink that will leave a crisp, clear impression and stand up to the laundering process. I happen to own many different types of stamp pads, so decided to put ten of them to the test!

I stamped the images on small pieces of cotton calico, looking to see how much the ink bled into the fibres of the cotton. I was surprised to see that they all did well, producing nice, crisp imprints. Next, I tested colour clarity and intensity, but to be fair, some of the ink pads were VERY old and perhaps not as juicy as they could be. Overall, I was happy with the impressions from all ten.

Since a number of the inks were water based, I really didn't think they would stand up to the laundering process, which involved a hand wash with laundry detergent, a clean rinse and drying with a hot iron. As you can see from the photos below, many of the inks did very well, with only one disappearing completely.

Although many of the ink pads produced great results, my preference would be either Archival or StazOn for permanent, crisp and clear impressions on fabric. Keep in mind though, that I didn't take longevity into account, so you might want to do your own test to see how many launderings your ink choice can take.

Kevin the Singing Koala

When making cards I often start by selecting my patterned paper, which in turn helps me to choose the colours for my image. It's MUCH simpler to start with the paper than to try to find something that matches after you've done all the colouring.

Singing Joy - with Deanne

Deanne has created two similar cards using the new Sing Joy set of digital stamps. For the first card, she used her copic markers to colour one of the koalas from the set, and for the second card she brought out her collection of coloured pencils.

It's always interesting to note how different an image can look just by changing the medium with which it's coloured. The markers give a lovely smooth finish to the project while the pencils, combined with some lightly textured paper, are coarser and help to give the impression of fur.

Colouring Digital Images

I have a mini tutorial to share with you today, all about adding extra colour to already coloured digital stamps. This is a great way to add your own little touches to digis when time is against you. It's also a useful way to practice your colouring, highlighting and shading because the base is already there to build on.

Start with a pre-coloured digital image printed on your favourite card stock. We're going to be applying pencils over the top, so the type of card isn't all that important, but just keep in mind that the surface texture will show when the pencil is applied.

I've added strokes of white pencil to the ears, chins and chests of each koala. I'm not trying to re-colour them, just add a hint of texture to give the impression that they're extra hairy. I've also used various greys to darken their noses and deepen the shadows under their arms, feet, legs and little bellies. The last addition I made was a large shadowy area at the bottom of the picture. This helps to "ground" the characters so they're not floating around in space.

And here's my finished image made up into a Christmas card. I hope you'll give this little technique a go, it's not too difficult and is a wonderful way to help boost your colouring confidence.
