Everything Papercraft - Monograms

Monograms are motifs that consist of two or more letters combined in an aesthetically pleasing way, often to represent a person, brand or company. The first known use of monograms was on Greek coins around 350BC, where they were used to represent individual cities. Historically, they’ve also been used as royal signatures, Christian symbols, artists’ marks, and as part of military standards.

In Victorian times, monograms were used by the upper class as a symbol of their wealth and prestige. Many modern-day companies use monograms as their primary means of identification, such as car brands, fashion houses, electrical companies and even banks and law firms.

For paper-crafters, monograms are a fun way to add a decorative element to cards, journal pages and scrapbook layouts. They can be sketched, stamped, die cut or even assembled collage-style. As always, we’re only limited by our imagination!

Fun and Festive

Fabulous seasonal papers, bright colours and cute images and the perfect mix for great Christmas cards... and Judy's creations have it all! She has used the bonus snowman and Santa images from the Cozy Christmas set of digital stamps to make her fabulous projects.

Did you take a close look at her Santa card? Notice something a little different from the original image? That's right! Judy added "eyes" to her Santa by colouring over his laugh lines. How creative is that?!

Card Toppers

The images from the Cozy Christmas set are a great size and shape for complete card toppers, which is especially handy for those of us who enjoy creating clean and simple cards. You can resize the images for bigger or small cards, and there's also the option of using the pre-coloured versions if you're in a bit of a hurry.

You can easily print the images onto a card blank, add some colour (or print the coloured version), and you have a one layer card. Just keep in mind that some colouring mediums, such as alcohol markers, may show through the cardstock making them unsuitable for a one layer card.

I've opted to create three individual card toppers rather than a one layer card. This means I don't have to worry about any of my markers bleeding through to the back of the cardstock.

I used alcohol markers to colour each image, adding a little bit of white pen to Santa's beard and hat for some added texture.

Next, I fussy cut the images leaving a tiny white border around the edges. As you can see, I also removed the extra cardstock from inside the candy cane frame, which will allow the background to show through.

I chose to mount the Santa image on silver mirror cardstock, which coordinated with the silver pen I used on the frame.

The moose image has been mounted on gold cardstock to match the gold pen I used on the bells.

For the snowman image, I embossed a piece of white cardstock with a dotted texture rather than using mirror cardstock, which gives the impression of snow falling.

Hot Tip Tuesday

Precision Gluing
When gluing shaped objects, such as flowers, only add adhesive to the areas that touch the surface of the project so that it retains its shape. Adding glue to the entire object and then pushing it onto the project will result in the item flatting out and losing all it's texture and dimension.

Joyful Snowman

Here in Australia, we celebrate Christmas in the summertime, so the first thing I thought of when I saw this cute card from Deanne was the beach! The colours remind me of golden sand and gorgeous clear seas... the perfect place for an Aussie Christmas. I don't think the poor snowman would last too long in the sun though, so perhaps we'd best leave him to his snowy climes in the north.

Gift Tags

The images from the Cozy Christmas digital set are perfect for creating cute little gift tags, and it's super easy to print a whole sheet in one go. I used the pre-coloured versions, added a "to" and "from" and then raided my mediums for anything shiny or sparkly! The little borders were hand drawn with a black fine point pen.

Meowy Christmas

These cute and fluffy Christmas cards were created by Judy with the new Christmas Kitties set of digital images. Her first card features gorgeous shades of golden yellow and deep red, which give her project a luxurious feel. Her second card is much brighter and has touches of whimsy with cute little ornaments and pretty snowflakes scattered around.

Be sure to stop by Judy's blog for more of her fantastic creations!

Santa Card

There's something you don't know about the new Cozy Christmas set of digital stamps... it comes with three bonus images of the characters without their frames! I've used the Santa image for today's card, coloured with pencils and mounted on a circle card. I placed the sentiment at the very bottom, flush with the edge, to help give the card some stability while standing up.
