Day 2 - "B"

It's all about the "B" colours - blue, brown and black.
The most difficult part of this card was adding black to a snowy, white snowman! I was worried it would be way too dark, but once the other colours were in place the contrast didn't appear quite as extreme. Although the shadows are very deep, I quite like how the finished image looks.

Day 27 - "X"

Ugh! The day of the dreaded "X" has arrived... the most difficult letter of the alphabet and the bane of many challenge participants. Happily for paper crafters, we have a couple of fabulous brands that begin with the letter "X", such as XPressIt blending card. Yay!

Day 22 - "T"

Today I have a tutorial to share with you that's all about adding a bit more oomph to your pre-coloured digital stamps. You'll need a printed, pre-coloured image and your choice of colouring medium. I've gone with a little snowman printed on kraft coloured card stock and I'm using Prismacolor pencils. For the best results, don't forget to choose the right paper for the colouring medium you're using.

1. Print your pre-coloured image onto card stock and select your colouring medium. Try to match the colours of your pencils or markers to the colours that are already in the image. You won't have much success colouring a red hat over black printer ink!

2. Now pick an area to start colouring and apply a very light layer. (If you're colouring with pencils, don't press too firmly. If you're colouring with markers or paints, select a very light shade.) Go in again and add some darker colour (by pressing more firmly on your pencil or choosing a darker paint or marker) in the areas that would be in shadow. Remember that the pre-coloured stamp will more than likely have the shadowing and highlighting done for you, so you don't need to be particularly fussy.

3. Now repeat the process for the other areas of the image until it's fully coloured. This is a great technique for practising your colouring skills or for boosting your printed images... especially when the printer is a little lack lustre.

YOUR TURN: Create a card using the letter "T" as your prompt.

New Release: Mr. Snowflake Set

I'm sure I've said it many times before, but I just love snowmen, especially when they're a little bit quirky and unusual. This new digital stamp set features Mr. Snowman complete with corn cob pipe and jingly hat. I have a feeling he'll be popping up several more times this month!

Mr. Snowflake Set

And, of course, I have some creative inspiration to share with you from my designers...

A.J.'s collection of fabulous cards and gift tags.

A sweet card from Judy with a pretty snowflake trim.

Karin has created a colourful Christmas greeting card.

Anesha has created a wine bottle cover, a gorgeous gift bag
to put it in, and a card to complete the gift set.

Carla's beautiful card, done in shades of blue with hints of red and green.

Two Christmas creations from Petra - one in traditional Christmas
colours and the second is shades of blue and green.

Day 5 - Adding Shadows (Tutorial)

Today I'd like to show you a relatively easy way to add dimension to your paper crafting without having to fussy cut and pop images up with foam tape.  This technique works by fooling the eye into thinking there is a shadow, and therefore, what it's looking at is a three dimensional object.

YOUR TURN:  Use the tutorial to create a card.
Upload a photo of your creation HERE.

Start by colouring your image.  As you can see in the photo above, I've marked the light source in the top left hand corner, which means that the light is coming from that direction and therefore all the objects facing that direction will be highlighted.  Hence, I coloured my leaves and berries with the lightest areas on the top left hand side and the darkest areas on the bottom right hand side.

Now choose your shadow colours.  I generally gravitate toward grey, but you could also use blue or purple if you wanted to.  Three shades is generally enough, but you want the lightest one to be as light as possible so that you can fade the colour out.  I used Copic markers for this tutorial, but the principles remain the same regardless of the medium you choose.

We're attempting to "lift" the image up from the background.  To do that, we must apply the shadow onto the background, directly opposite our light source.  We know the light is coming from the top left-hand side, therefore all the shadows will be on the bottom right-hand side of the objects.  I've started by applying a line of the darkest colour (C5 in my case) to the right-hand side and bottom of these two leaves.

I've walked the colour out a bit by applying C3 and C1 over the top of the first line. You don't have to soften the shadow if you don't want to.  A harsh line will give the illusion of very bright light, such as you'd find at midday.

In the photo above, you can see that I have applied shadows to a quarter of the image.  The image is starting to look like it has some dimension.

Once the shadowing is complete, the image looks like it has a lot more dimension. Surprisingly, the shadows become almost invisible as the eye is drawn to the lighter parts of  the image.

CAN YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE?

Day 2 - Wreaths

I love creating cards with wreaths, especially when there are so many fabulous stamps, dies and embellishments with which to create them.  My favourite technique is to die cut several of the same wreath and layer them together with some rhinestones or pearls to decorate.

Two Seasons and Two Cards

Spring has well and truly arrived here in Australia, inspiring me to reach for shades of bright green and pretty pink to colour my first wreath (Colouring Tutorial here). But in other parts of the world, the beautiful colours of autumn are turning the forests and parks into spectacular palettes of red, orange and yellow... perfect for my second project!

One for spring...

... and one for autumn.

Here are the two cards I made using the coloured wreaths.

Build A Wreath Cards

Build A Wreath Set

Ready to see some more fabulous cards created with the Build A Wreath set of digital stamps? Well, here you go...

These two cards from Anesha feature several elements from the set, including the blossoms, which she has enlarged and used as the focal points for both her projects.

Carla has put together four beautiful cards with a seasonal theme... spring, summer, autumn and winter. I especially love the autumn themed card with the gorgeous fall colours and the sweet little die cut bunny.

Annie's card has lots of layering. She printed out two copies of her coloured image and layered them together for a fabulous dimensional look. She then created her own background paper by enlarging the same image.

Petra created her wreath card using the plaited wreath as a base and then building on it with the blossoms, berries and leaves. To complete her project she added a gorgeous border of pink and brown stitching.
