August Challenge

Create a card or paper-craft project using any Beccy's Place image, upload a photo of it to your blog or other hosted site, and submit a direct link below. The challenge runs from now until midnight on the 31st of August 2022 (AEST).

To keep things interesting, I'll be adding an additional optional element to the monthly challenges.

This month it's all about colour!

As always, keep in mind that the additional challenge is just an optional extra.

PLEASE READ THE CONDITIONS CAREFULLY

BEFORE ENTERING THE CHALLENGE

• Entries that don't meet the conditions will be deleted from the challenge.
• Your project must be created during the month of August 2022 and entered into the challenge during the active challenge period. Due to an automated system, late entries cannot be accepted.
• Each month I will include a re-mastered digital image from my library of freebies as well as a bonus challenge, such as a card sketch, bingo grid, etc. You DO NOT have to use the image or bonus challenge on your project, but you MUST use a Beccy's Place image, either free or purchased, to be eligible for entry.
• You can enter as many times as you like and you can submit your card to any other challenge you wish.
• At the end of the month three different random winners will be chosen to receive a $20.00AU store credit for any digital stamps at Beccy's Place. To redeem the store credit, winners must have a Beccy's Place customer account. (Please note, you do not need an account to enter the challenge. It is acceptable to create an account in the event that you win. Accounts can be closed at any time.)
• Store credit won during any Beccy's Place challenge is only redeemable for digital stamps.
• Entries can be uploaded to the challenge from any hosted site including blogs, online galleries, Google photos, etc. If you do not have access to a hosted site, please feel free to email your photos to me and I will add them from the Beccy's Place Guest blog.
• Beccy's Place designers may enter the monthly challenge but are not eligible to win prizes.

From The Owlery

I decided on a simple hexagonal card base for my little owl, cut from purple cardstock to match his hat. I also printed the sentiment purple and added matching rhinestones to the panel for a little bit of sparkle. The charm hanging from the end of his hat was coloured with a silver pen.

Days of Magic

Judy has coloured and fussy cut two of the images from the Hocus Pocus set of digital stamps to create these two magical cards. She layered the images over spectacular patterned paper backgrounds to create eerily beautiful scenes that would be perfect for lovers of fantasy and science fiction.

Appearing From The Shadows

I wanted to make the rat wizard look as though he was appearing from the shadows, lit only by the burning candle and glowing orb. To give that illusion, I added a little of the light green to the underside of the rat, as though it's coming from the orb. Then I added some of the yellow to the tips of his ears and along the top portion of his body as if lit from the candle above. I think the contrast between the black background and the light yellows and greens really gives the scene an eerie feel.

Wise Old Owl

Carla has used the owl image from the new Hocus Pocus set of digital stamps to create two fabulous cards with decidedly spooky backgrounds! Her first card features a big, bright full moon with a scattering of stars and planets that also holds a birthday sentiment. The yellow ink is a great contrast for the purple of the wizard's hat. Her second card, also for a birthday, has a fantastic rust-look background with spatters of ink in different hues.

Tutorial - Pop Up Card I

My friend Penny taught me how to make these pop-up cards several years ago at a Christmas make-and-take at our stamping club.  They work beautifully with fussy cut images or die cuts, and can be customised to whatever theme or occasion you wish.

 

 

1.  You will need two card blanks (any size) plus the images or die cuts you wish to "pop-up" in the centre of the card.  I've chosen to use three little owls from my Owlette set that I coloured and cut out.  Make sure your three images fit side by side in the centre of your card without any over hang.

2.  Score and fold one of the card blanks in half.  With the fold closest to you, mark and measure three evenly spaced tabs.  These tabs will hold your images and form the "pop-up part" of the card.

3.  My tabs are 1/2" wide and 1/2" tall.  I started by centring the first tab right in the middle of my card blank, equal distance from both edges.  I then marked each of the two side tabs equally distant from the centre tab.  The distance you place the tabs apart will depend on the size of your card blank and the size of the images or die cuts you are using.

4.  Use a knife or sharp scissors to cut along the vertical lines (I've marked them as "cut" in the photo).  When you open your card you will see the cuts have gone through both sides with the centre fold in the middle.  Now score along the tops of the tabs so they fold easily.  See the picture below.

5.  On the inside of the card, pull up the tabs so they fold in the opposite way to the rest of the card.  These tabs will hold your images or die cuts.  (You can adjust how far your pop-ups will protrude by altering the measurements of the cuts.  Because I cut my tabs at 1/2", my little owls will stand 1/2" away from the back of the card.  If I wanted to have them further away from the card I would make the measurement longer.  You can play around with the measurements and have items further forward than others by making some tabs longer and some shorter.)

6.  Secure your images to the bottom section only of the tab.  I used some strong glue to hold my little owls in place.

Your pop-ups are now done!  They will fold down when the card closes, and pop up when it opens.

7.  Take the second card blank and cut it in half.  Adhere one of the pieces to the back of the card to cover the cuts and folds.  Be sure you don't get any adhesive on the tabs or your pop-ups won't pop up!

8.  Decorate the other half of the card blank and adhere to the front of your card, again covering the cuts and folds.  (Alternatively, you could keep the second card blank in one piece and simply adhere the two cards together.  You will need to make some slight adjustments to the length of the inside card so it fits neatly and also ensure there is enough movement in the spine.)

9.  Finish your card by decorating the inside as desired.
