A Touch of Gold

I've been into the scrap drawer again, and this time I've upped my game with a little bit of gold cardstock between each of the patterned paper strips. The most difficult part was the thin gold border around the outside. It would have been far simpler to use a large piece of gold card, but I really wanted to do it all with off cuts.

Paper scraps are an inevitable by-product of paper crafting. Fortunately there are lots of wonderful ideas out there for ways to use your paper off-cuts, including fabulous backgrounds like the one I created today. I completed my project with a gold embossed sentiment and a sheer ribbon bow.

Day 21 - USE SCRAPS

It's another non-alphabet prompt day, our second last for this year, and this time I'm challenging you to create a card that primarily uses scraps. It might be paper scraps - which I've done - or scraps of textiles, embellishments, left over letters or other little scrappy bits that's you've held on to with every good intention of using them on your projects. Oh my gosh, I did it!  This is the last scrap background!  Woohoo!!!  This year long project has finally come to an end and I don't have to look at another scrappy background ever again!

Actually, I quite enjoyed the challenge and am very happy that I have been able to make use of so many of the scraps that were languishing in my drawers.  I have tried very hard over the past year not to make even more scraps, but, well, you can probably guess how that turned out.  Don't worry though... I'm giving all those new scraps to my mum!

I tried to get a bit artsy with my holly today but only ended up making a huge, kaleidoscopic mess that had to be "filed" in the recycling.  Thankfully I hadn't damaged my scrappy background and was able to stamp and colour another image... with a little less abandon than the previous effort.

I've had this image stamped and coloured for quite a while and figured it was about time to use it on a card.  It was a little bit too subtle against the scrappy background so I ended up hand cutting a black border to help distinguish it.

Today's card was pretty simple to create.  I began by stamping the images directly onto the background, not worrying about any overlap.  I stamped the flowers again onto some X-press it blending card and coloured them with copic markers.  After fussy cutting around each flower I secured them over the previously stamped images with pieces of foam tape.

I don't think you'll be surprised to hear that I went in to this card project with no particular plan in mind.  I just gathered a collection of stamps and inks and went nuts.  If you look closely you might be able to see the trail of... let's call it creativity... that I left in my wake.  There was a diamond background stamp, a mesh stamp, music score, butterfly stamps, bird stamps and finally the blossom stamp.  I used a white pencil to bring the blossoms forward (out of the melee), then added a heat embossed sentiment and some ribbon.

There are lots of white ink pads available on the market for stamping, but I have yet to find one that gives the same vibrant result that you get from heat embossing.  The embossing sits on top of the paper, rather than soaking in to it, so you get a lovely opaque result.

I felt like doing a little bit of colouring today, so out came the copic markers and a gorgeous digital image I purchased recently.  In hindsight, I should have coloured all three flowers purple, which I think would have worked better with the background.  Ah well, live and learn.

I raided the paint swatches at my local hardware store to create the flowers for today's card.  I did some white embossing on the darkest colour just to break it up a little bit, then layered the different sized flowers together to create a floral border.

 

I've counted up my remaining scrap backgrounds... only ten to go!  Woohoo!

I can't believe I'm sharing my thirtieth scrap card with you today!  I had my doubts about finishing ten let alone thirty... but here it is.  You might recognise the beautiful roses from Altenew, which I've already used a couple of times in this on-going project.  I love experimenting with colour combinations for the flowers and leaves, it's very therapeutic.

Orange is not one of my most favourite colours, but I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the way these roses turned out.  I think the green of the leaves plus the ribbon probably helped to break down the intensity of the orange a bit too.
