Tutorial - Surprise Pop Up Card 2.0

I created my first Surprise Pop-Up card several years ago, but thought I could tweak it a little to simplify the mechanism. I also decided to make the card into a single layer, but if you'd prefer, you can mount it onto a card front for a more traditional style.

TEMPLATE:

1. Cut a sheet of A4 cardstock in half vertically so that you end up with a piece that measures 10.5cm x 29.7cm. Score in the centre and fold in half as though you were making a tent fold card. Use a craft knife or trimmer to cut a flap in the front of the card that is 3/4" from the centre fold and 3/4" from either side. Refer to the template above for correct placement.

2. Open the card out and lay horizontally on your score board. Score 3/4" from the bottom edge, between the two cut lines (at the base of the flap you cut in step 1). Score again at 23/4" between the two cut lines, and then one more time at 43/4". Fold along the score lines. (All the score lines will be on the flap you cut in step 1. Refer to the template if necessary).

3. Turn the card around so that the centre fold is facing you (it will look upside down). Stamp a sentiment in the section indicated below. Don't add any embellishments here as you want the cardstock to slide easily.

4. Cut a large tag measuring 3" x 51/2" and round the four corners. Stamp or write the word "pull" at the top, or if you'd prefer, you could add a little pull tab.

5. Decorate the front of the card with patterned paper or more stamping.

6. Now we're going to secure our large pull tag to the narrow section at the end of the flap. I've added a series of photos below to show you how it's done...

Place a ruler or straight edge about 1/4" from the cut edge of the flap.

Use the edge as a guide for keep the large tag straight.

Add glue to the narrow strip at the end of the flap.

Line up the bottom edge of the large pull tag with the edge of the flap,

and line up the side with the ruler to keep it straight.

Turn your card over.

The easel section should retract when the tag is pulled.

7. Open the card again and place glue on the card base, around the large tag, to form a pocket (see photo below). Close the card to secure in place.

8. Time to decorate!

Add one of the long sentiments to the bottom of the card, just over the cut line.

Keep the adhesive on the frame, around the bottom and side edges as shown below.

The easel should slide easily behind the sentiment panel.

I find it easiest to glue my images together first, then secure them to the easel.

CUTTING GUIDE

Cut out the images and patterned paper circled in red.

Note: The dog images can be cut with the Dog Gone It cutting dies.

SUPPLY LIST

• Dog Gone It card making kit
• White A5 card base - tent fold
• Scissors for fussy cutting
• Paper trimmer
• Adhesives - double sided tape, foam tape, glue
• Two 7cm x 1cm strips of white cardstock
• One 6cm x 1cm strip of white cardstock
• Self-adhesive rhinestones, pearls, or liquid pearls and shimmer pen, if desired

SCORING GUIDE

1. Trim the plaid patterned paper to 10cm x 14.3cm. Cut out one of the hound dog images and a sentiment panel.

2. Secure the patterned paper to the front of your tent-fold card base with glue or double sided tape. Adhere the sentiment to the centre bottom of the card so that it is evenly spaced on either side and the bottom. Glue the hound dog slightly over the edge of the sentiment panel. If desired, scatter some rhinestones or pearls around the sentiment.

3. Following the score guide above, score the narrow strips of cardstock and fold along each line. These will form the pop-up mechanisms for the centre of the card.

4. Trim the paw print patterned paper to 10cm x 14.3cm and secure to the inside of the card with glue or tape.

4. Cut out one pug, one English sheepdog, and another hound dog, along with three party hats. Secure the hats to each dog with a thin line of glue. Feel free to swap the hats around if you prefer.

5. Secure the sheepdog to the top, inside section of the card, slighly left of centre. Take care to keep the dog just above the fold line of the card or you may have difficulty keeping the card closed.

(NOTE: for those who like a bit more precision - the dog's hip is about 2cm from the edge of the card)

6. The little pug will sit to the left of the sheepdog on one of the 7cm x 1cm cardstock strips. Place the strip on the bottom section of the card so that the end with one score line is facing away from you (see photo below).

7. Fold the end of the strip backward and apply glue to the little tab as indicated below.

8. Secure the strip of cardstock to the base of the card, just below the fold line (not over the top of it). The strip should be parallel to the edge of your card and about 2cm away.

9. Fold up the bottom of the strip along the second score line (you should see two squares of cardstock - see photo below). Add glue to the end of the cardstock strip, then close the card leaving the strip folded over. Hold closed for a couple of minutes to give the glue time to set.

Your card should now look like this:

10. Apply glue to the long section of the cardstock strip and lightly press the pug onto the panel. Close the card and press firmly so the pug sits correctly on the pop-up panel.

11. Repeat the process on the right side of the card with the other 7cm x 1cm cardstock strip. (Note: take care when adding the glue to the pop-up panel as the hound has a gap between his front legs. You don't want any glue showing or you will glue the card closed.)

12. The 6cm x 1cm cardstock strip is placed in the centre of the card, between the pug and hound, using the same technique as the first two strips.

13. Secure the birthday cake to the middle pop-up mechanism.

14. Add the sentiment panel at the top of the card. Fussy cut the large bone and secure over the corner of the sentiment. For a bit of fun, add some shimmer pen to your sentiment, the cake, and the party hats!
