Tutorial - Cascade Gatefold Cards

These show-stopper cards are perfect for extra special occasions - big birthdays, weddings, engagements, or those extra special Christmas cards. They look fantastic when sitting open for display and fold up nicely to a 5" x 7" x 1/4" size. On the downside, they require a lot of cardstock and paper, and are a little more complicated to construct... but don't let that stop you as they really are spectacular!

TEMPLATES FOR CUTTING AND SCORING

1. Place a 7" x 101/2" piece of cardstock horizontally on your score board and score at 21/2", 23/4", 73/4", and 8". Fold along the score lines to form the gatefold card base. (NOTE: If you're starting with a piece of A4 cardstock, make the 7" cut first and reserve the long offcut for the belly band)

2. To decorate, adhere a 63/4" x 43/4" piece of patterned paper to the centre, inside panel. Adhere two 63/4" x 21/4" pieces of patterned paper to the panels on either side, and two 63/4" x 21/4" pieces of patterned paper to the front panels of the card. Set aside.

3. You will need two 7" x 101/2" pieces of cardstock for the cascade section of the card. Place one piece horizontally on your score board and score at 1/2", 3", 51/2", and 8". Repeat for the second piece of cardstock.

4. Measure 2" up from the bottom right hand corner and make a pencil mark. Cut your cardstock from the top of the first score line to the pencil mark. Repeat for the second piece of cardstock. Turn one piece over so you have two diagonal pieces that mirror each other.

5. On each piece of cardstock, identify the score line that is closest to the centre. It will either be at the 5" or the 51/2" mark depending on which piece of cardstock you're working with. Measure the half way point along the score line, which is about 21/4". On the first piece of cardstock, you are going to cut out the bottom half of the score line. On the second piece of cardstock, you are going to cut out the top half of the score line. (See the pictures below, and the templates above for correct placement).

6. The 1/2" panels on each piece of cardstock are tabs that will secure the cascade to the gatefold base. Bend each one back and trim the overhang so it is flush with the diagonal edge of the cardstock. This will give you a neater finish.

7. To decorate the cascade, cut two pieces of patterned paper measuring 65/8" x 21/4", two measuring 53/8" x 21/4", two measuring 41/8" x 21/4", and two measuring 27/8" x 21/4".

8. Each pair of patterned papers must be mirrored to fit the cascade. The easiest way to do this is to flip one piece over so that the pair is right sides together, and then cut them at the same time.

9. TIP: To save time, place one of the angled cardstock offcuts (from step 4) into your trimmer to act as a guide. Push the patterned paper pair up against the offcut, line the corner up with the edge of the blade, and cut. This will give you a perfect angle. Repeat for the remaining pairs of patterned paper.

(For those who prefer a measurement, make a pencil mark 11/8" from one corner and cut from the opposite corner to the pencil mark).

10. Lay the two pieces of angled cardstock on the desk in front of you, with the tab edges together. Adhere patterned paper to the first and fourth panels of each piece (see photo below).

11. Flip both piece of angled cardstock over. Adhere patterned paper to the second and third panels of each piece (see photo below).

12. Turn them over again so the tab edges are together. Fold along the second score line so that the two pieces of patterned paper on the other side of the cardstock become visible. Fold along the last score line so that the shortest piece of patterned paper becomes visible. Repeat for the second piece of the cascade. (See photos below.)

13. Slot the two pieces together at the cut lines.

14. Fold both long tabs to the back.

15. Turn the cascade over and apply glue to one long tab.

16. Position the cascade over the centre panel of the gatefold card, lining up the bottom edges and ensuring the sides are level with the inner score lines. The top of the cascade should be even with the top edge of the gatefold base. Press in place and allow the glue to grab.

17. When the glue has set, fold the entire cascade to the side to expose the second tab. Apply glue to the second tab and fold the cascade back, lining it up with the first half and keeping all the edges even.

18. To secure the small panels at the bottom of the cascade, place a 3" x 1" scrap of cardstock onto the card. Apply glue on the top side only (face up) , then fold the panels over the top, pressing them into the glue.

19. Time to decorate! Take advantage of the cascade section of the card by adhering your embellishments to individual layers. Take care with the placement of your adhesive or you may end of gluing sections of the cascade together.

20. To create a belly band, cut an 1111/16" x 11/4" piece of cardstock (which just happens to be the exact size of the offcut you trimmed in step 1) and score at 3", 33/8", 83/8", and 83/4".

21. Fold along the score lines, then wrap the belly band around your card securing the ends together with glue. (Don't pull the band too tight or you'll have difficulty sliding it on and off your card.)

22. Decorate the band with two 43/4" x 1" pieces of patterned paper and whatever embellishments you wish. (I always secure my belly band at the front of the card and then cover the join with something large).
