Bon Bons in the UK is an old word for a sweet only really used these days for a particular chewy sweet that is covered with powdered sugar.
I have read the Wikipedia entry on Christmas Crackers and the inventor of them did actually start off making bon bons and based the shape on the wrapped confectionery. Who knew? The entry is her if you are interested in reading more.
